The Root Canal Process
To start, your dentist will administer local anesthesia and sedation (if necessary). This will numb the area surrounding the tooth, ensuring you don’t feel any pain. A dental dam is then used to isolate the tooth so that moisture does not accumulate. Next, a small opening is created in the crown of the tooth so that we can access its inner chambers.
We will begin to clear out any decayed and diseased tissues as well as the canals before removing the pulp (the innermost layer of the tooth). After sanitizing the area and filling it with a biocompatible substance known as gutta-percha, we will seal the tooth from possible reinfection.
After a week or so, you will return to have your custom dental crown placed on top of the tooth for maximum protection.
The Benefits of Getting a Root Canal
It’s very common for patients to fear needing a root canal. If you’re in the same boat, then you may find it helpful to hear a few of the reasons it’s actually good news, like:
- The procedure can save your tooth – If left untreated, the infection will continue to progress, wreaking havoc on your oral health in the process. In fact, there may even come a time when the only option left is to pull it. Fortunately, a root canal can help prevent that from happening.
- The process is virtually painless – Another noteworthy benefit: the first step of the procedure is always to numb your mouth. That way, you don’t feel any pain. Instead, you can relax comfortably in the treatment chair as we work to eliminate the infection.
- The results are lifelike – For years, metal crowns were used to restore the health and strength of a damaged tooth. Now, we offer metal-free ones that come in a variety of shades, ensuring that no unwanted attention is drawn to your smile moving forward.
